Sugar
Rishon LeZion’s Ramat Eliyahu neighborhood is facing an imminent transformation: the streets, the buildings, even the people, are all about to change in the wake of the Clearing and Development urban renewal project. The installation is comprised of a sugar sculpture and a video that documents the collection of sugar for the sculpture. In order to gather the sugar for the sculpture, I wandered around the neighborhood, knocking on doors asking the neighbors for a cup of sugar. In a way, the video presents a portrait of the buildings destined for demolition, on the decorations in their common hallways and the graffiti that covers the walls. The sugar sculpture is a model of the fictional, imaginary Ramat Eliyahu that will be built. I melted and cast the sugar that I collected from the neighbors into different molds, creating candy buildings that form a model of a neighborhood. The video and sculpture are displayed side by side, underscoring a cause and effect relationship while juxtaposing reality and fantasy.
